Fabricated Gates & Doors: Standard Sizes for Residential Homes

A door or gate may seem like a simple enough installation and many homeowners tend to forget that it too needs to be designed, fabricated and installed with care.

There are some basic factors that have to be taken into account when purchasing a door, such as – the style and type of door and whether it should swing outwards or inwards. Once you have made your choice on these points, you would have to start measuring.

While you do have the option to get fabricated gates & doors in custom sizes, we at Boston Ironworks have seen that most homes have standard door openings and require standard door sizes as well. Take a look at some of the door sizes available:

1. Exterior doors and French doors

The standard dimensions of an exterior/external door are 80”x 36”. However, it’s common to see new home structures with doors that are 30” and 32” in width. The other standard sizes you may find include:

Door heights of 7’ & 8’
Door widths of 24”-42”
Heights of steel/fiberglass doors are generally 6’ 8” and 8’. The standard thickness of these doors is 1 ¾”
6’8″ x 6′
5’0” x 8’0”
6’0” x 8’0”
8’0” x 8’0”

2. Sliding Glass Doors

These are a very popular feature and are installed in spaces leading out to patio, deck and other outdoor spaces on the property. Different manufacturers craft sliding doors of different sizes, but the standard ones are:

3. Interior Doors

The height of all passage doors should be a minimum of 80”; the standard width sizes for these interior doors – 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” & 36”. The Standard thickness for interior doors is 1 3/8”, if the door exceeds 36” or 90” in height. In this case the recommended thickness for these door would be 1 ¾”

4. Closet & Utility Doors

These doors tend to have narrower passages compared to other doors in the house. In some older homes, the former could be up to 18” in width. However, modern day closet and utility doors come in a standard size of 96” x 30”.
